The Types of Friends Every Woman Needs, According to a Psychotherapist

There is a taxonomy of female friendship that most of us have intuited without ever naming it, and the types of friends every woman needs, it turns out, can be mapped with some precision. Psychotherapist Eloise Skinner has done exactly that, identifying seven distinct kinds of friend that collectively make up what she considers a properly nourishing social life, in a piece for Stylist Magazine.

The framework is not, I should say, a checklist. You are not meant to audit your address book and feel anxious about the gaps. It is closer to the way a good wardrobe works: not every piece serves the same function, and the whole is considerably more useful than any single item within it.

The Science Behind Why Female Friendships Matter

Before arriving at the typology itself, it is worth pausing on what is actually happening, physiologically, when women connect with one another. According to Amen Clinics, oxytocin, often described as the bonding hormone, plays a central role in female friendships. When women engage in meaningful social interactions, oxytocin levels rise, producing feelings of trust, connection, and stress relief. The biology, in other words, is doing a great deal of invisible work. Every conversation over a long lunch, every late-night phone call, every walk that started as thirty minutes and became two hours, the body is registering all of it.

Which perhaps explains why the quality of a friendship matters so much more than its frequency, and why a single, well-placed friend can recalibrate an entire week.

The Seven Types of Friends Every Woman Needs in Her Life

Skinner’s seven categories span a wide emotional range. The cheerleader is the one who believes in you with a fervour that occasionally embarrasses you. She is essential precisely because her faith is unconditional, which is a different thing from being uncritical. The confidant is the friend to whom you say the thing you have not said to anyone else, the one whose discretion you trust completely.

Then there is what Skinner identifies as the ride-or-die: the friend who will be in the car, no questions asked, whether the journey is celebratory or catastrophic. This is not a friendship that necessarily involves frequent contact. It is a friendship held together by a particular quality of loyalty that does not require maintenance in the conventional sense.

The list continues outward from those intimate registers. There is the friend who challenges you, whose opinions you respect enough to find genuinely uncomfortable. There is the friend who makes you laugh without effort, who reduces the whole complicated business of being alive to something manageable and occasionally absurd. There is the friend who shares a specific context (a workplace, a neighbourhood, a phase of life) and whose understanding of that context is irreplaceable precisely because it is so particular.

And then, Skinner suggests, there is the friend who is simply good company: easy, undemanding, a pleasure to be around without the weight of deep history. This one is underrated. Not every friendship needs to carry meaning. Some are there to remind you that an ordinary Tuesday evening can be genuinely enjoyable.

What the framework resists, usefully, is the idea that any one friend should carry all of this. The expectation that a single person can be confidant, cheerleader, challenger, and comedian simultaneously is, if we are honest, a design flaw in how we have come to think about close friendship. It places an impossible weight on one relationship and quietly devalues the others.

Skinner’s point, and it is a well-made one, is that a rich social life is a portfolio. Different friends hold different things for you, and the health of that portfolio depends on the range, not on any individual holding within it. The oxytocin responds accordingly: every meaningful connection counts, whatever its particular register.

Skinner’s full breakdown of the seven types, with her analysis of each, is available now on Stylist Magazine.

Nell Whitmore spent eight years in magazine editorial before going freelance. She started as a features assistant at a women's lifestyle title, worked her way up to commissioning editor, and left when the print side got thin enough that she could see the spreadsheet through the pages. She writes about interiors, food, travel, and the small domestic decisions that nobody admits take three hours of research. She has opinions about paint colours, sourdough, and the correct weight of a linen napkin, and is aware this makes her sound like a specific kind of person. Nell lives in the Cotswolds with her husband and a cat who has no interest in soft furnishings. She reads cookbooks in bed and considers this a personality.
