Sportmax SS27 Collection: Layered Transparency at Palazzo Litta

The Sportmax SS27 collection opened with a line of Emily Dickinson, which tells you immediately that this was not going to be a summer show about removing things. According to Harper’s Bazaar Australia, the show notes began with a passage from Dickinson’s poem ‘Nature is What We See’, a choice that set the intellectual temperature before a single garment appeared in the courtyard of Palazzo Litta.

The brief, as the house framed it, was heat. The Sportmax SS27 collection answered that brief by doing the opposite of what heat usually demands.

Layering as the Logic of Staying Cool

Rather than pare back for summer, Sportmax layered. The condition was transparency: organza fine enough to be near-invisible set over cotton slips, the layers building colour through accumulation rather than opacity. Trousers gathered at the ankle, covering the leg without enclosing it. A collarless blazer in a papyrus tone was worn over bare skin above a pair of the sheer trousers, the effect somewhere between restraint and exposure. Jackets lost their sleeves. Chrome belts held everything loosely, letting garments hang off the body the way fabric drops from a rail.

The palette understood the assignment: écru, blush, washed-out neutrals and pops of colour pitched at the far end of a hot afternoon. This is not the language of maximalism; it is the language of a house that knows when to let the fabric do the talking.

Harper’s Bazaar Australia also notes that dresses were cut on the bias and draped artfully across the body, a construction choice that does exactly what the collection’s logic requires: it allows the cloth to move with the wearer rather than contain her, the bias pulling the weight of the organza into something that skims rather than sits.

The Contrarian Details That Made the Collection

Sportmax SS27 was built on productive contradiction. Leather appeared in a collection nominally about staying cool. Kitten-heel sandals came trimmed in fur for high summer. A red blazer worn over a red hood over the slimmest black capris held its ground against all that gossamer transparency, offering a moment of opacity that made the sheer pieces read sharper by contrast.

The accessories pressed the same argument. Scrunched orange drawstring bags, so bright the models seemed to be carrying the sun in one hand, read as punctuation against the pale neutrals. Hems ran short at the front and long at the back, extending coverage in one direction while pulling it away in another. Nothing here treated summer as an occasion for subtraction.

A Point of View That Holds

What Sportmax demonstrated in that Milanese courtyard is that a coherent point of view is harder to construct than a coherent palette, and rarer. The house held on to its tailoring, its leather, its instinct for the elongated silhouette. It simply engineered the coolness back in through the choice of cloth, the removal of a sleeve, the drape of the bias-cut dress. The result is a Sportmax SS27 collection that dresses a woman for warmth without surrendering any of the considered structure the house is known for.

The Dickinson quotation was not incidental. Nature is what we see, the poet wrote, and what Sportmax offered was clothing that lets the natural world (light, air, heat) pass through rather than be resisted. That is a more interesting answer to a warming world than anything a purely minimal collection could provide.
