The festive season has officially arrived in London as Covent Garden’s iconic Christmas lights were switched on in a grand ceremony led by Hollywood actor and West End star Luke Evans. Hosted by musician and broadcaster Myleene Klass, the evening brought holiday cheer to the city while raising funds for Save the Children, Covent Garden’s charity partner for the second consecutive year.

The event took place on the historic Market Building’s balcony, where Myleene Klass opened the night’s entertainment, setting the stage for a festive showcase. The cast of Tina! – The Tina Turner Musical kicked off the performances, with leading actress Charlotte St Croix singing “Simply the Best” in Tina Turner’s famous gold fringe minidress. The celebration continued with a lively rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock” by the cast of Mean Girls The Musical, complete with a humorous surprise appearance from “Regina George’s mum,” who filmed the performance from a nearby balcony. The London International Gospel Choir rounded out the performances, leading the crowd in holiday classics.

As the evening’s finale approached, Myleene Klass invited Luke Evans to the stage to lead the highly anticipated countdown. Dressed in Paul Smith, Evans pushed the switch-on button, illuminating the historic Market Building and the towering 55-foot Christmas tree, which is adorned with 40 oversized gold bells, giant red baubles, and spinning mirror balls. Covent Garden’s new lighting installation at Seven Dials was also unveiled, extending the festive display across the estate with an additional 150,000 LED lights cascading through the streets.

For Evans, the event was particularly significant as he reflected on his personal connection to the area. “It is so exciting to be turning on the Christmas lights this year,” he said. “I used to live in Covent Garden in my twenties and performed on the West End stage, so this area holds a special place in my heart. I feel honoured to be part of the Christmas light switch-on in aid of Save the Children, as this year, more than ever, children need our support. Even the smallest donation can help Save the Children continue its work to keep children safe, healthy, and learning.”

Myleene Klass also spoke on the importance of supporting children during the holiday season. “Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, and I loved bringing festive magic to Covent Garden by hosting the light switch-on in aid of Save the Children,” she shared. “As we celebrate, it’s important to remember that children here in the UK and across the world are facing harsh realities like hunger and conflict. Donating can make a real difference by supporting charities like Save the Children.”

Gemma Sherrington, Interim CEO of Save the Children UK, expressed appreciation for the partnership with Covent Garden, saying, “We have loved being the official charity partner of Covent Garden this year, spreading festive cheer and hope. This time of year is both reflective and hopeful, and we’re grateful to everyone who joins us at Covent Garden to enjoy the festivities and visit our Christmas pop-up shop on Henrietta Street.”

With 29 miles of gold leaf and 275 kilos of glitter suspended in Covent Garden, this year’s display promises a magical experience, reinforcing Covent Garden’s reputation as a top holiday destination. The event marks the start of Covent Garden’s seven-week festive programme, bringing visitors together to celebrate, donate, and spread holiday joy.
