Morgan Sindall to Lead Phase Two of Bradford’s Future Centre

Bradford College has appointed Morgan Sindall Construction to continue its work on the Future Technologies Centre, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development. The contractor, which previously handled the demolition of a derelict mill for the first phase, will now lead the construction of a state-of-the-art four-storey building on Thornton Road, Bradford. The new centre is set to be a key asset in training students for the emerging industries of modern automotive, digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

The second phase of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2026, will provide the college with a cutting-edge facility aimed at developing skills in electric and hybrid vehicles, advanced manufacturing, and digital technologies. The Centre is part of a broader effort to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the technology and low-carbon sectors across West Yorkshire. Once open, the new Centre will house Bradford College’s Automotive and Digital Engineering Department, which will move from its current location at Bowling Back Lane. The facility is projected to accommodate up to 650 students.

Morgan Sindall Construction’s first phase of work involved extensive site surveys and the demolition of the Junction Mills building, which had been vacant for years. The company’s innovative approach to design and pre-construction helped to save 56 tonnes of carbon, well above the initial target of 10 tonnes, reflecting its commitment to sustainability.

The project, which has been secured through a £15 million grant from the Department for Education’s Further Education Capital Transformation Fund (FECTF), is also being supported by a £2 million contribution from Bradford College itself.

Ben Hall, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction’s Yorkshire business, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying: “We’re thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Bradford College by delivering what will be a game-changing new facility for Bradford. The Future Technologies Centre will equip the people of Bradford with the skills they need to thrive in tomorrow’s technology-driven industries.”

The Future Technologies Centre is part of Bradford College’s ambitious estates strategy to enhance its infrastructure and support regional economic growth. Chris Webb, CEO and Principal of Bradford College, highlighted the significance of the project: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Morgan Sindall as we enter the second phase. The Future Technologies Centre is central to our goal of nurturing careers in sectors that drive local economic development.”

This development follows the completion of the Garden Mills building for higher education STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) training, which is also part of the college’s extensive £32 million funding investment. The Future Technologies Centre, alongside other projects, forms part of Bradford College’s vision to transform its facilities and offer its students world-class learning environments.

Once completed, the Centre is expected to have a positive impact on the local community by creating job opportunities and helping to build a future-ready workforce equipped with the skills needed to succeed in high-tech and green industries.
