David Lammy Attends Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg

Foreign Secretary David Lammy attended the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on 14 October 2024, marking the UK’s renewed commitment to closer cooperation with the European Union on pressing global issues. This visit, Lammy’s first to the council in over two years, signifies a pivotal moment in UK-EU relations following the recent strains brought about by Brexit.

At the invitation of Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Lammy joined discussions with the 27 EU Foreign Ministers, addressing key challenges in European security. The agenda included urgent topics such as ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine and the escalating crisis in the Middle East, particularly concerning the threats posed by Iran.

This meeting follows Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent visit to Brussels, where he expressed a commitment to moving beyond Brexit and working collaboratively with the EU for the benefit of both British citizens and Europeans alike. Lammy’s participation is part of a broader strategy to enhance regular engagement with EU partners, emphasising the necessity of collaboration on international affairs and security matters.

“UK security is indivisible from European security,” Lammy stated. “This government is determined to reset our relationships and deepen ties with our European partners to make us all safer. This visit is an opportunity for the UK to be back at the table, discussing the most pressing global issues with our closest neighbours and tackling the seismic challenges we all face.”

The significance of Lammy’s attendance at the Foreign Affairs Council underscores the UK’s intent to work alongside the EU on foreign policy matters. The collaboration between the UK and EU has been exemplified by their joint efforts regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Together, they have imposed sanctions on Russia, depriving the country of substantial financial resources. Additionally, both parties have coordinated training for Ukrainian troops, equipping them with essential skills, while also providing humanitarian support to those in need.

The UK’s participation in the Foreign Affairs Council represents a shift towards a more engaged approach in addressing shared challenges. It is expected that discussions in Luxembourg will lead to a framework for ongoing collaboration between the UK and EU, enhancing their partnership on security matters.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the UK government is keen to reinforce its position as a proactive partner in European and global security. Lammy’s involvement in this council meeting highlights a concerted effort to build stronger ties with European allies, ensuring a united front in tackling issues that threaten both regional stability and international peace.

The outcome of these discussions will play a crucial role in shaping future UK-EU relations, as both parties seek to navigate the complexities of contemporary global challenges together.
