Harry and Meghan’s UK Return: Six Years On, the Noise Has Not Changed

The reports have been building for weeks, and now the Harry and Meghan UK return appears to be confirmed: The Telegraph reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are considering a private, non-royal residence outside London, with their children due to start at a British school in September. There are, at this stage, no plans for the couple to resume royal duties.

One could be forgiven for thinking this was, on its face, a straightforward piece of domestic news. A family, having spent six years abroad, deciding to come home. And yet.

Harry and Meghan UK Return: What the Reaction Reveals

Before the ink had dried on any of the reporting, the commentary arrived in its usual formation. They are doing it for attention. For money. For relevance. To play the victim again. There have been jokes, there has been speculation, and there has been the customary noise about what other members of the royal family privately think, attributed, as ever, to unnamed sources whose proximity to the truth is difficult to assess.

It is worth pausing here, because the reaction itself is the story. When did moving home become an act requiring justification? A regular couple, returning after six years in another country, would be welcomed back with a bottle of wine and a lot of questions about the house prices. Their motivations, complex and private as anyone’s motivations for large life decisions tend to be, would be considered their own business. The possibility that their priorities have shifted, that their children’s sense of identity has become more pressing, that family relationships have quietly changed, or that they simply missed the particular grey-green of an English morning, none of that would need to be explained, least of all to the internet.

Meghan Markle divides opinion. That much is established fact. But there is a certain inconsistency in a culture that instructs women in the public eye to be kinder to themselves, and then greets their every decision with barely concealed contempt.

School in September, and a Base Alongside Montecito

The practical details, where they are available, are worth attending to. Yahoo Entertainment reports that Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are set to begin school in Britain in September, a detail that rather anchors the speculation in something concrete. Children starting school is not a publicity strategy; it is a school run.

The Telegraph further reports that the couple will retain their homes in Montecito, California, and Portugal, so the UK base represents an addition to, rather than a wholesale dismantling of, their current life. Meghan, sources insist, will continue to run her lifestyle brand As Ever from their new British residence, a practical arrangement for anyone whose work is not confined to a single geography.

Meanwhile, People reports that Harry was expected in Britain in September for engagements connected to WellChild, the children’s charity he has supported for more than two decades, as well as events tied to the Invictus Games. The September timing, in other words, is not arbitrary. It carries the logic of a school term, a charity calendar, and a sporting event, which is to say it carries the logic of an ordinary, if unusually scrutinised, life.

The question that lingers (and it is one the commentary cycle rarely pauses to ask) is what precisely anyone expects them to do instead. Stay in California indefinitely, to avoid the accusation of seeking attention? Return to royal duties, which would attract its own volume of criticism? The binary is false, and the reaction to the Harry and Meghan UK return has, once again, illustrated that for this particular couple, there may not be a version of any decision that escapes the same cycle of noise. What is actually new here is two children, enrolled in a British school, beginning what sounds very much like an ordinary September.
