Burberry Trench Coat Exhibition Opens at the V&A This September

The Burberry trench coat exhibition arrives at V&A South Kensington on 21 September, a free display that traces one garment’s journey from military-issue weatherproofing to the kind of coat people still fight over on the rails. Entitled The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon, it runs until 3 January and marks Burberry plc‘s 170th anniversary, the house having been founded in 1856.

There is something pleasingly direct about giving a single garment a retrospective of its own. Fashion exhibitions can sometimes mistake breadth for depth, assembling a century of clothes and leaving the visitor to do the connecting. This one goes the other way: one coat, examined from every angle, in three acts.

Three Acts, One Coat: How the Burberry Trench Coat Exhibition Is Structured

‘Invention’ opens in 1879, with Thomas Burberry’s development of cotton gabardine, the breathable, weatherproof cloth that gave the coat its original purpose as serious protective kit. ‘Craft’ dismantles the trench to admire its engineering: the hand-finished collar, the house check lining, the storm flap, the detachable throat latch, each detail answering a specific problem the weather posed. ‘Creativity’ closes with 19 runway looks from the past 25 years, including pieces by creative directors Daniel Lee and Christopher Bailey, which together make the case that the coat has never stopped being rethought.

The display sits in the museum’s Prince Consort Gallery, whose mahogany cabinets once housed fabrics from the textile collection. It is rarely opened to the public, and the choice of room says something about how both institutions are treating this: not as a promotional exercise, but as a genuine act of object-based storytelling.

A number of pieces from the Burberry archive will appear in public for the first time. Burberry’s brand curator Carly Eck has described the selection as spanning early twentieth-century catalogues through to a trench once worn by the couturier Hardy Amies, the sort of provenance detail that shifts a garment from fashion object to social document. ‘The Burberry trench is a global design icon rooted in British craftsmanship and a symbol of innovation, creativity and timeless style,’ Eck says. ‘We are thrilled to partner with the V&A as a highlight of our global celebrations marking 170 years of the house.’

The V&A’s Head of Modern Textiles and Fashion, Oriole Cullen, frames the collaboration in similar terms. ‘We are delighted to work with the Burberry Archive to showcase the history of the celebrated trench coat: a British fashion staple that has stood the test of time and continues to evolve over a century on,’ she says. The shared language is not accidental: both institutions have spent their existence arguing that British design deserves serious attention, and this is one of the more elegant expressions of that shared project.

The Broader Partnership and What Comes Next for V&A Fashion

The timing of the Burberry trench coat exhibition is not incidental. It lands within a larger, multi-year partnership between the two institutions, the most substantial fruit of which is The Burberry Gallery, a major overhaul of the V&A’s fashion galleries, due to open in autumn 2028. The Fashion Gallery itself closed on 4 May to begin that period of redevelopment, a transition that will reshape how the museum presents dress for the next generation.

In the meantime, access to the V&A’s fashion collection continues. The V&A East Storehouse, opening 31 May 2025, will hold much of the collection, and the full holdings remain searchable at Burberry‘s namesake site and at vam.ac.uk. The Crafting an Icon display, then, is not filling a gap so much as opening a chapter, a reminder of why the permanent collection matters, built around a coat that has been making that argument since the nineteenth century.

There is a particular satisfaction in the V&A choosing to give the trench its moment precisely as its fashion galleries go dark for three years. A gabardine coat that started as functional outerwear for men in the field, that eventually found its way onto the shoulders of half of twentieth-century cinema, and that still appears on every major runway with something new to say, it is, as display subjects go, quietly inexhaustible.

The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon is at V&A South Kensington from 21 September 2025 to 3 January 2026. Entry is free.
