Next Autumn Knitwear Trends: Fair Isle, Faux Fur and the Heritage Moment

Next autumn knitwear trends have landed, and they make a persuasive case for the season’s two dominant impulses: a deep, almost nostalgic pull towards heritage craft, and an equally insistent desire for pieces that will still look right in three years’ time. Next has put together an edit that translates both of those instincts into wearable separates at prices that do not require a second mortgage, and, genuinely, some of it is worth paying attention to.

The warmth has lingered longer than usual this season, which means the changeover feels compressed. Layers are the practical answer: lighter shirting worn under heavier knits, summer’s sneakers surviving a little further into the calendar than you might have expected. But the wardrobe shift is coming, and this collection gives a clear sense of which direction it is heading.

Fair Isle, Heritage Checks and the Return of the Kilt

The heritage strand is the strongest thread running through the collection. Fair Isle knitting, as Good Housekeeping UK notes, originates from the tiny Scottish island of the same name, its intricate, repeating geometric patterns built from diamonds, crosses and small motifs in contrasting colours. What was once purely functional, a way of keeping the cold at bay on a remote outcrop of the Northern Isles, has become one of fashion’s most durable recurring references. Next’s iteration delivers high-neck ivory styles with navy and chocolate woven details, tactile forest green and white jumpers, and blue and burgundy cardigans with removable triangle scarf details. The removable scarf is the kind of small, considered gesture that elevates an otherwise straightforward piece.

The Next autumn knitwear trends extend beyond Fair Isle into broader heritage territory. An ankle-grazing navy checked kilt-style skirt is one of the standout pieces, worn long and serious in the way that skirts feel genuinely elegant when they reach toward the floor. There are subtle check prints on elevated wool coats, and in the N.Premium collection, asymmetric red checked midi skirts and tailored khaki culottes carry the heritage reference into more directional territory. The N.Premium line is positioned around elevated design and higher-quality finishes, and it shows.

Faux Fur, Sportswear and the Next Autumn Knitwear Trends Beyond Heritage

Faux fur has had an interesting cultural journey into this autumn. Who What Wear has tracked the “mob wife aesthetic” that gained momentum ahead of fashion month, drawing on screen characters like Carmela from The Sopranos, who treated extravagant faux-fur coats as a statement of intent rather than mere outerwear. You can trace a direct line from that cultural moment to what Next is offering: a soft grey cropped faux fur that reads effortlessly with a crew-neck and jeans, a structured hip-length deer-print style, and a chocolate brown teddy bear coat that asks very little of the pieces it is worn with. The category has also attracted a more considered shopper, with Who What Wear noting that faux fur and shearling are increasingly being purchased alongside vintage and upcycled pieces by buyers thinking about the longer life of their wardrobes, with labels creating coats from found and thrifted materials.

Sportswear enters the picture through half-zip knits, a red cowl-neck puffa jacket, and cobalt blue crew-neck styles. These are not runway conceits; they are straightforward pieces that update a pair of tailored trousers without requiring any particular commitment to a look. Striped sweatshirts straddle the heritage and sportswear registers neatly, and fleece-lined parkas worn with khaki cotton trousers and chunky socks have the kind of off-duty ease that is harder to engineer than it appears.

For the evening, the collection turns to texture and streamlined silhouettes: deep blue and olive velvet tailoring, halter tops, corset styles that work beneath a suit jacket, and little black dresses paired with square-toe sandals. N.Premium adds outerwear that moves from day to evening without an obvious seam change, including a plum tie-front coat with a cape detail and a charcoal wool style that could pass through most occasions without announcement.

The in-house brand Bhoem handles the more craft-oriented end of the offering. Single-breasted suede jackets, herringbone blazers, argyle and collared mushroom-toned knits, and checked dresses with contemporary drape details carry a subtly bohemian sensibility that sits apart from the heritage and sportswear strands. It is, in its quieter way, the most considered part of the edit. The collection is available now at next.co.uk.
