The Vantage Foundation has announced a new partnership with Doorstep Library, a charity dedicated to enhancing literacy and promoting a love of reading among children in underserved areas across London. As part of the collaboration, the Vantage Foundation has donated US$2,000 to support Doorstep Library’s mission of bringing books and reading directly into the homes of children.
Doorstep Library focuses on areas where access to books and reading resources is limited. Volunteers visit families on a weekly basis, delivering books, sharing stories, and encouraging parents to engage in reading with their children. This hands-on approach helps address literacy gaps and foster a love of reading from an early age.
Recent research from the National Literacy Trust and Chase highlights the pressing need for such initiatives. Findings reveal that financial struggles are leading 1 in 5 parents and carers to spend less on books for their children, while 1 in 7 state primary schools lack access to a library. These issues contribute to significant disparities in early learning opportunities.
Doorstep Library’s impact is illustrated through touching stories from the children they serve. For example, a nine-year-old boy named Josh, who initially struggled with reading aloud, surprised his volunteers by asking to read a book to them and his mother. Although he stumbled on some words, this moment marked a pivotal point in his reading development.
In another story, eight-year-old Nia expressed her appreciation for Doorstep Library’s work to Katie Bareham, CEO of the charity. Nia said, “When we grow up, we will remember that this was the best bit of the week and we will read with our children as well.” This sentiment reflects the deep, lasting impact of the charity’s efforts.
Katie Bareham commented, “We are breaking the cycle of children not being read to for pleasure and joy, aiming to create lasting memories and a reading culture that will benefit future generations.”
Steven Xie, Executive Director of the Vantage Foundation, added, “Reading opens doors to new worlds of imagination and knowledge. We are thrilled to support Doorstep Library in providing children with access to books, regardless of their economic situation. Their dedication to fostering a love of reading is crucial for creating a positive impact on the future of these children.”
