Your foundation finish guide: matte, dewy, satin and everything between

A foundation finish guide sounds like the kind of thing a beauty counter assistant thrusts at you before you’ve had your coffee, but it is, in fact, the most useful piece of information in any base-buying decision. Getting the shade right matters, of course. Getting the finish right changes how your entire face reads, whether the skin looks alive or somehow less so, whether the foundation vanishes by noon or holds quietly through a long day.

The vocabulary alone is enough to derail the uninitiated: matte, satin, luminous, sheer, soft-focus, dewy. These are not marketing synonyms. Each describes a genuinely different relationship between light and skin, and each suits a different set of circumstances.

What your skin type actually tells you about foundation finish

Skin type is a useful starting point, though not a rigid prescription. Dry or dull skin tends to respond well to hydrating, radiant formulas because they contain more moisture-binding ingredients and light-reflecting pigments, compensating for what the skin isn’t producing on its own. Those prone to excess shine will generally find that a soft-matte finish offers better longevity, particularly through the T-zone, where coverage tends to disappear first.

Combination skin is the awkward middle ground, but satin foundation handles it better than most. Sitting between matte and dewy, satin has enough luminosity to keep skin looking dimensional without amplifying shine in the areas that least need help. It is, broadly speaking, the most wearable finish across skin types.

Modern formulas have complicated the old rules helpfully. Matte no longer means flat and powdery in the way it once did: the new generation of soft-matte bases is designed to control shine while still allowing the skin some texture and life. Equally, a dewy formula need not mean sliding off by the second hour of the day.

The foundation finish guide, finish by finish

Satin is the Goldilocks finish: polished, not glossy; coverage that reads as skin rather than mask. E.l.f.’s Soft Glam Satin Foundation, at £8, offers buildable medium coverage with a smoothly luminous result that consistently punches above its price point. For everyday wear where you want the complexion to look considered without looking laboured, it is a quietly reliable option.

Soft-matte is for anyone whose foundation routinely vanishes before lunch. The Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Natural Matte Longwear Foundation, available at Sephora, delivers medium-to-full coverage with a shine-controlled finish that retains flexibility rather than sitting stiffly on the skin. The formula comes in 50 shades, which makes finding a close match considerably more likely than with many competitors. For context on the brand’s reach: according to Yahoo Finance, Fenty Beauty reported $450 million in net sales last year, with a valuation that could range between $1 billion and $2 billion. That kind of scale tends to generate genuine investment in shade development, and it shows.

Luminous formulas are the answer for skin that tends to drink foundation up and leave it looking flat an hour later. The NARS Light Reflecting Foundation, at £45 from NARS, gives medium, buildable coverage with what might be described as a lit-from-within finish: luminous rather than sparkly, which is a distinction worth paying attention to. It evens the complexion without erasing its texture.

Skin tints exist for the days, or the people, who want barely a suggestion of base. Trinny London’s new Fearless Skin Tint Drops offer weightless, buildable coverage in 30 shades, with enough pigment to subtly even out the complexion while leaving freckles and real skin visible beneath. At £45, they occupy a useful middle ground between a barely-there tint and a foundation proper.

Dewy is the finish for those who want the complexion to look glossy, hydrated and as though it has just benefited from several hours of sleep it probably hasn’t had. Charlotte Tilbury’s Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick, at £37, swipes directly onto skin and blends to a sheer, glossy finish that reads as immediate freshness. Anyone prone to shine can apply a light dusting of translucent powder through the T-zone and leave the higher points of the face to do their glossy work undisturbed.

The finish you choose is not a minor footnote to shade selection. It is half the decision, and now you have the vocabulary to make it deliberately.
