The Zegna SS27 Malibu show was the kind of gesture that announces itself before a single look has been seen: Alessandro Sartori moved his collection out of Milan entirely, planting it instead on the boards of Malibu Pier, with the Pacific stretching out behind. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zegna typically saves its collection debut for Milan Fashion Week, which makes the California address more than a location choice. It is a statement about what this collection is for.
That statement had a name. Sartori called it La Villeggiatura, the Italian tradition of relocating life for the summer, carrying rituals, wardrobes and habits to somewhere else without losing one’s sense of self. As WWD reports, Sartori was specific about what the concept meant to him: not a holiday but a more complete kind of migration, recalling a period from the 1950s through the 1970s when entire families would spend weeks together in rented villas and apartments, bringing their lives with them rather than leaving them behind. The clothes that followed were designed to carry that weight, or more precisely, to make carrying it feel effortless.
A Silhouette Built on Ease
Sartori’s silhouette was vertical and fluid. Cut close to the body in places, looser in others, but consistently relaxed in its bearing. Striped tailoring recurred throughout, frequently paired with matching striped shirts to build elongated blocks of colour. Boxy and fluid shirts arrived in silk and leather, worn with tailored shorts that kept the mood unhurried. A belted safari jacket came through as one of the collection’s most considered pieces, joined by short-sleeved overshirt versions and duster coats worn over shorts.
The stronger argument, though, was made through fabrication. Washed hemp, raw silk, linen jacquards, stripe seersuckers and bouclé towelling gave familiar shapes a surface richness that rewarded closer attention. Knitted jackets were supple without slouching. Fluid overshirts and leather anoraks offered light structure rather than constraint. Smocked funnel necks, braided suede bombers and knitted suede pullovers added further depth, and the stripes that ran through the tailoring continued across fabrics and accessories, appearing in different scales and irregular arrangements so the motif never became mechanical.
The palette moved through aquatic greens and blues, softened neutrals and warmer accents. Accessories maintained the register: soft leather slippers and moccasins, striped nubuck bags, silk foulards and knitted silk scarves, all of which extended the collection’s logic without competing with it.
After the Zegna SS27 Malibu Show: Chateau Marmont
The Malibu presentation was not where the event ended. According to WWD, guests afterwards gathered at Chateau Marmont, where the collection was displayed across a series of cottages, allowing them to shop the runway looks directly and place made-to-measure orders. It is a format that collapses the distance between runway and wardrobe, between the idea of a garment and its acquisition, and it suits the collection’s own philosophy rather well. La Villeggiatura, after all, was never about looking at beautiful things from a distance.
There is a particular discipline required to make clothes that feel genuinely relaxed without tipping into formlessness. Sartori has been refining this for some time at Zegna, and SS27 reads as a considered step forward within that project rather than a pivot away from it. The move to Malibu sharpened the lens. Against that pier, in that light, with the Pacific behind, the clothes had to earn their ease. The hemp and the bouclé towelling, the supple knits and the safari jacket, the stripe threading through every category: together they proposed a man who knows where he is going and does not need to announce it.
What Sartori has always understood is that luxury at this register is not about exception but about continuity. The clothes are designed to move between occasions, climates and moods without asking anything of the wearer beyond the decision to put them on. That the season’s debut was made on a California pier, and that orders could be placed the same evening in a Hollywood hotel, says something about whose wardrobe this is and how they actually live in it.
