Ib Kamara Exits Off-White After Four Years Steering the Brand

Ib Kamara exits Off-White, the label announced this morning, bringing to a close a four-year tenure that asked one quietly impossible question: how do you follow Virgil Abloh? The answer, it turns out, was to stop trying to replicate him and instead build something adjacent, something that shared the same restless curiosity but bore its own distinct fingerprints.

Kamara took over as creative director in 2022, stepping into the role months after Abloh’s death, with the brand’s foundations still warm and the fashion world still grieving. The brief was not simply to design clothes but to hold a legacy together while finding room inside it to breathe.

What Ib Kamara Built at Off-White

What he made of that brief was, season by season, a body of work rooted in the same tension Abloh had loved: structure pulling against fluidity, streetwear leaning into formalwear, the quotidian elevated until it became something else entirely. His reference points ranged from Miles Davis to New York City’s creative class to the particular silence of outer space. The collections moved.

So did the shows. His debut collection arrived with a performance choreographed by Nicolas Huchard, dancers painted in electric blue and dressed in matching bodysuits, the whole thing closer to theatre than a runway presentation. His AW24 show saw the cast move through a giant version of the board game Ludo, set against a backdrop of larger-than-life diamanté dice. These were spectacles with a logic to them, never chaos for its own sake.

According to The Impression, Kamara was born in Sierra Leone and spent part of his childhood in The Gambia before moving to London at 16. That biography matters here, not as colour but as context: his instinct for threading together disparate worlds, for finding the through-line between what seems incompatible, was never simply an aesthetic preference. It was structural.

Ib Kamara Exits Off-White Amid a Changing Business

The departure lands at a particular moment in Off-White’s corporate life. LVMH sold its controlling stake in the brand to Bluestar Alliance, and according to WWD, Bluestar Alliance’s chief executive officer Joey Gabbay oversaw the firm taking control of the brand in September 2024. The transition from a luxury conglomerate to a brand management firm is not a neutral one, and the creative implications of that shift remain to be absorbed.

The scheduling has already shifted. As Glossy has reported, Off-White moved from showing at Paris Fashion Week to showing at New York Fashion Week last year, a geographical repositioning that carries its own weight of meaning for a label whose identity was forged in dialogue with European fashion’s infrastructure. No show is currently scheduled for the incoming season, and no successor has been announced.

For Kamara, the question of what comes next has, in part, already been answered. In June 2025, he launched Raw Materials by Ib Kamara, a multidisciplinary creative agency, as The Impression reports. The name is quietly instructive. Raw materials are what you begin with, not what you finish with, and it suggests a man interested in the earlier, more open stage of making.

His four years at Off-White were spent, at their best, making that kind of openness look considered. Collections that could have sprawled were edited; shows that could have been indulgent were disciplined by a coherent internal logic. The question now is what Off-White becomes without a creative director in the chair, and how Bluestar Alliance navigates a brand whose value is inseparable from the quality of the creative decision-making at its centre. That is not a question with an obvious answer this morning.
