Dior Medallion Loafers Are the First Word in Jonathan Anderson’s New Chapter

The Dior Medallion loafers arrive at a particular moment: one of genuine transition at a house that does not do transition quietly. Jonathan Anderson, the 41-year-old Northern Irish designer who Who What Wear reports took the helm at Dior in 2025, has already demonstrated that his instinct is neither to demolish nor to preserve wholesale, but to find the seam between archive and now and pull on it, carefully, until something new emerges.

The Medallion loafer is a good example of what that instinct looks like in practice. The starting point is familiar: the classic Italian slip-on, one of the more enduring shapes in dressed footwear, with its rounded toe and clean vamp. What distinguishes this version is the oval medallion centred on the front, an emblem that has been part of the Dior vocabulary since 1947. It is a small, precise detail, and it does what the best archival references do: it grounds the shoe in something specific without tipping into costume.

The Craft Behind the Dior Medallion Loafers

The execution rewards a close look. The upper is smooth lambskin, supple enough that the delicately pinched seams read as a tailoring gesture rather than decoration. The hardware, finished in palladium, has the cool, slightly silvered quality that sits well against pale leather and, it turns out, equally well against a dark trouser. The reference point here, as with much of the Dior archive, is the rococo motifs of 18th-century France: the ornamental, the finely worked, the quietly excessive. But the round toe keeps the shoe from tipping into anything fussy, and the balanced proportions do the quiet work of making a formal shape feel usable on an ordinary day.

The sole is supple leather, which matters if you intend to actually wear these rather than shelve them. Loafers in this register are often made for looking at rather than for the pavement, but the proportions here suggest something more considered: a shoe designed for the kind of day that moves between a morning desk and an afternoon gallery, without requiring a change of footwear.

Anderson at Dior: A Longer Game

The shoes sit within a larger body of thinking that Anderson has been articulating since arriving at the house. In October, he presented his much-anticipated Le Monde describes as a designer thinking long-term rather than chasing what is trendy, and the debut womenswear collection for spring/summer 2026, shown during Paris Fashion Week, offered early evidence of that disposition. Where some designers announced at a major house feel compelled to make a loud statement of rupture, Anderson’s approach appears more interested in duration: in what survives a season, and then several more.

The Medallion loafer fits that thinking. It is not a shoe that reads as a seasonal proposition. The silhouette is grounded enough to absorb whatever is happening in fashion around it, and the medallion detail, because it is genuinely from the Dior archive rather than invented to appear so, carries a kind of material honesty that the eye recognises even without knowing the reference. That matters in a market where the difference between a considered archival piece and a cynical heritage play is increasingly difficult to disguise.

There is also something to be said for the category itself. The loafer occupies a useful middle ground in a wardrobe: dressier than a trainer, less committed than a heel, able to resolve the question of footwear on a large proportion of mornings without much deliberation. In lambskin with a palladium medallion, it resolves it rather elegantly.

The Dior Medallion loafers are available now via Dior.

She started as a features assistant at a women's lifestyle title, worked her way up to commissioning editor, and left when the print side got thin enough that she could see the spreadsheet through the pages. She writes about interiors, food, travel, and the small domestic decisions that nobody admits take three hours of research. She has opinions about paint colours, sourdough, and the correct weight of a linen napkin, and is aware this makes her sound like a specific kind of person. Nell lives in the Cotswolds with her husband and a cat who has no interest in soft furnishings. She reads cookbooks in bed and considers this a personality.
