Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel review: the enzyme cleanser I keep returning to

The Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel review that follows is, I should warn you, a decade in the making. That is not hyperbole. There are products I have admired for a season, products I have recommended once and forgotten, and then there is this particular white bottle, which has occupied a shelf in my bathroom with the quiet confidence of something that knows it is not going anywhere.

I first tried the distinctive pinky-orange cleanser close to a decade ago, and I have gone through countless bottles since. As a beauty journalist, that kind of faithfulness is genuinely unusual. New launches arrive constantly, each one promising a brighter, smoother, bouncier complexion, and the professional instinct is always to move on and test the next thing. A handful of products survive that churn. This is one of them.

Why sensitive skin and enzyme exfoliation work well together

My skin has a fairly low tolerance for actives. Acids and retinoids are things I admire in theory, the way one might admire a very cold swimming pool: the results are undeniable, but the reality of using them too often is redness, discomfort and skin that feels stripped and reactive. The Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel sidesteps that entirely. It delivers the brightening, resurfacing quality I want from more aggressive exfoliants, without any of the aftermath I dread.

The mechanics of it are pleasing. Massaged onto dry skin, the gel melts into an oil; add water and it emulsifies into a milk. Fermented pumpkin enzymes lift away dull surface cells gently, working at a pace the skin can tolerate. The formula also contains vitamin A palmitate, vitamins C and E, MSM and starflower oil, which together lend the cleanser its nourishing quality. The result is skin that feels soft and plump rather than tight. It is, as descriptions go, rather good for a cleanser.

Worth noting, too, that this is not a product restricted to those with sensitive or dry complexions. The formula works for blemish-prone, combination and oily skin as well, which is the kind of versatility that earns a product genuine staying power in a bathroom cabinet.

The Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel review verdict

After a couple of weeks of consistent use, the difference in my complexion is one I notice without having to look for it: brighter, fresher, with the kind of healthiness that is easy to mistake for a very good night’s sleep. It is the phrase every skincare brand reaches for, but in this case it is accurate: my skin looks as though it has just had a facial.

Part of my long affection for this cleanser is also, genuinely, about the brand behind it. Oskia was founded by Georgie Cleeve, and having met Cleeve over the years, I have always been convinced by the depth of research and thought that goes into each formulation. A brand where the founder can speak at length about the reasoning behind every ingredient is one I trust. It makes a difference to how I feel about the products.

At £41, the Renaissance Cleansing Gel is not the most modest item in anyone’s skincare rotation, but price-per-use over nearly a decade has a way of reframing things. Available at Face The Future, it sits at the more considered end of the cleanser market, where it belongs. Some products impress for a fortnight. This is the one my skin has chosen to keep, year after year, and at this point I have stopped trying to talk it out of the decision. For the full original write-up, it first appeared on Stylist.
