The Sex Recession Causes Explained: Why Desire Outpaces Action

The sex recession causes explained by data make for sobering reading: in 1990, 55% of US adults aged 18 to 64 reported having sex at least once a week; by 2024, that figure had fallen to just 37%, according to Embrace Sexual Wellness, citing the 2024 General Social Survey. The gap between wanting and doing, it turns out, has never been wider.

It is the particular texture of this moment that deserves attention. Women reporting high libido, active dating lives, and genuine curiosity about pleasure, and yet arriving at the end of another week having had no sex at all. Not from lack of interest. Not from prudishness. From something more diffuse and harder to name.

The Sex Recession Causes Explained in Numbers

The trend is not anecdotal. Among adults aged 18 to 29 specifically, approximately 24% reported having no sex in the past year as of 2024, a figure that has roughly doubled since 2010, according to the same General Social Survey data cited by Embrace Sexual Wellness. For a generation that grew up with unlimited access to information about sex, that is a peculiar place to have landed.

The Institute for Family Studies adds a further layer to this picture. Between 1996 and 2008, 59% of married adults aged 18 to 64 reported having sex once a week or more. For the period 2010 to 2024, that number fell to 49%. The recession is not only a single-person problem; it cuts across relationship structures.

Cohabitation patterns may partly explain why. The share of young adults living with a partner, whether married or cohabiting, fell from 42% in 2014 to 32% in 2024, according to Embrace Sexual Wellness. Fewer people sharing a bed with a regular partner is, on the most basic level, fewer opportunities. But the structural explanation only takes you so far. Plenty of coupled people are also reporting less sex than they would like.

What the Data Cannot Fully Account For

There is something the numbers cannot quite reach, which is the quality question. Frequency is measurable; satisfaction is messier. The conversation around the sex recession tends to collapse the two, as though getting the numbers back up were the point. It is not obvious that it is.

What women describe, when they speak honestly about this period, is not simply a drought. It is a growing refusal to settle for sex that does not interest them, on terms that do not suit them, with partners who have not earned it. That recalibration looks like abstinence from the outside. From the inside, it can feel like a long-overdue raising of standards.

The conditions of contemporary life do the rest of the work. Exhaustion is not a trend piece angle; it is a structural fact for anyone working full-time, maintaining a home, and carrying the social and emotional labour that still falls disproportionately on women. Add the specific frictions of modern dating, the apps, the investment of time and optimism that a first meeting requires, the disappointment rate, and it becomes less mysterious that desire fails to convert into action.

There is also the question of what sex is competing with. Evenings have filled with other things: comfort, autonomy, sleep. For women who have spent years accommodating other people’s needs, an evening alone reading or watching something good is not a consolation prize. It is, for a great many, a genuine preference, at least some of the time.

None of which means the recession is benign or that its causes are simply a matter of women wisely choosing themselves. For those who want connection and are not finding it, the data reflects something lonelier: a structural drift away from the conditions that make intimacy possible.

The Institute for Family Studies and researchers tracking the General Social Survey will continue watching those frequency numbers. Stylist has been reporting on the shape of that loneliness too, and the women living inside it. The numbers confirm the scale; the women confirm the cost.
